Where is/How to get to the CMOS battery on this model? When I plugged an item into a USB port the laptop died & now won't boot. Have read elsewhere that temporary removal of CMOS battery may cure this.

I'm not sure if it's the same for your laptop.
Now, my guess is that youe problem is not related to the bios but some application you loaded from that USB. Somehow you messed up boot system,
Try TestDisk. I'ts an application which MIGH help rebuild boot suystem. NOT SURE, of course
