The original Schwinn Varsity was a traditional (and heavy) 10 speed made from 1960 - 1986, and were equipped with a traditional "quill" stem (the part that holds the handlebars). The more recent Varsity models are completely different - mountain bikes with a "threadless" stem that is not generally amenable to raising. You CANNOT raise the bars by adding more spacers, only by moving spacers, if any, that are on the top of the stem so that they are under it instead.
